Having been a general fan of the Magpul AFG2 (Angled Fore Grip version 2), I kept wishing they would make a version that was directly molded into the replaceable lower panel of the Magpul handguard so as to let your hand rest closer to the handguard itself. Unfortunately Magpul hasn’t created that yet but they have come out with the XTM Handstop Kit. I was hoping it’d fit the bill and picked one up for my AR.
IN THE BOX:
- one Hand Stop piece
- one Index Panel
- one full XTM Enhanced Panel
- one XTM Enhanced Half Panel.
What you don’t get is a rail, so you’ll need to pick one up separately.
The panels are easy to install on your rail. All the panels are in 2 pieces that click together over your rail, except for the handstop itself The handstop instead slides over the rail and then a screw is tightened to lock it into place.
IN THE FIELD: I like the handstop as a compromise between the AFG and trying to keep your hand closer to the handguard. It’s comfortable since you can setup the panels exactly the way you want, but it still keeps your hand farther away from the handguard. Does it help at the range? Yes, the handstop helps you grab your rifle at exactly the same point every time allows you to pull the rifle close into your shoulder.
FINAL THOUGHTS: Does it work? Yes. Is it worth $20? I don’t think so. $10-$15 would be better priced but it’s still cheaper than the Magpul AFGs and most foregrips in general. It’s not the same as having an AFG or a normal foregrip, but it’s an excellent compromise to get most of the same benefits while keeping your hand in a more natural position while you shoot.
